Testimonial for SSSS Mary Wiemann, 5/1/2000 Participation in the Social Science Student Success workshops have given me three major advantages: Reminded me of what I know. This workshop reinforced a lot of what I am doing right. It also reminded me to DO a lot of what I know is right, but often forget to do in the deluge of information, papers and students. Taught me new ways. Since the workshop was so "facilitative," it was easy to talk about ideas and try out new things without having to feel defensive. I got help from a number of colleagues in this workshop on my original ideas, which made them MUCH better! Sharpened my perspective-taking. This workshop encouraged my perspective-taking in two ways. First, I was constantly exposed to how the students I teach might be perceiving what I am doing. It is difficult to take the role of the other, particularly when you are the person in charge, so this focus was helpful. Secondly, it helped me take the perspective of people outside my field and the perspective of adjunct instructors. Since I facilitate so many adjuncts in our department, it was most helpful to see their perspective and to focus on what I need to emphasize in helping new instructors in the classroom.
