Description of Activity

WAYS TO GET STUDENTS TO ASK QUESTIONS:

1. Ask them what their reasoned opinions are on a matter. Set up a problem by outlining opposing viewpoints, and then ask them to take a side, and to give good reasons for doing so.
2. Allow them to carefully complete their own thoughts. if you lead them carefully through a thinking process, rather than just spill out information, chance are they'll have better retention. As a result, they'll be able to ask questions later about what they retain. There is nothing wrong with several minutes of silence in a classroom while students are thinking or working.
3. Make them responsible for material IN CLASS. Make sure that they know that they are likely to be called on to speak in you r class. that way, they'll have considered the material. If they’ve done this, they’ll also have thought about it, if even only to a small degree.
4. Ask questions of the material yourself. if there are areas which are likely to raise problems for students, ask them questions first! They'll feel more confident asking questions if you do as well.
5. NEVER punish a question in class. Even the most irrelevant question displays inquisitiveness. In cases of rude or inappropriate delivery, make a point to separate the question from the delivery to the class. Answer the question, while showing disapproval of the attitude of the questioner.

Application

These are best used by students who are finding themselves mentally dropping out of class. It is also a good way for teachers to look out for those students.
