Bring me a Question!!

Purpose Statement

This assignment asks students to read, critically, their text (or required readings) and produce questions related to the reading for that period. The primary goal would be to create an environment in which students arrive at class with some background knowledge on the lecture topic at hand.

Description of Activity

Students are required to come to class with a prepared question related to the reading for that class period. The are not required to hand in their question but a small number of students are called upon (randomly without replacement, so all students are called) to present their question for discussion. For the first several weeks I will request that everyone turn in their question as a check on attendance. I also use this opportunity to review and comment (written comments) on questions, and answer them. This produces a level of confidence so students are ready when they are called upon later in the semester to ask their questions.

Materials Needed

No material, but preparation to lead discussion on any topic related to the required reading for that class session.

Application

Once the details of class are out of the way (announcements, returned handouts, etc.) and you are ready to start the main component of the class, the instructor is ready to ask for questions. Everyone should have one or two, so anyone in the class can be called upon. Take the question, answer it, turn it back to the class for discussion or ask the student what he or she thinks. Instructors can use any of a number of techniques for answering questions.
