Getting Assignments Done on Time

Scott Bell
Time Management

Purpose Statement

The purpose of this activity (assignment design) is to provide students a set of temporal guidelines for the successful completion of out of class assignments.

Description of Activity

For this activity each assignment (weekly, semester, etc.) includes critial success factors along with an estimated guideline for the completion of the assignment. The timeline includes a breakdown of the major tasks that need to be completed in order to produce a successful finished product. Along with each of the major tasks there is a brief description of the task and what might be the most time consuming component of that task.

Materials Needed

There are no additional material required beyond the physical assignment that is being handed out. The main component tasks within the assignment should be understood Instructors should be comfortable with the amount of time each component task in the assignment will take the student (estimate). This information along with a brief description of each component task will provide students with valuable information for completing each assignment.

Application

This technique is best used in conjunction with take home assignments. I usually distribute these assignments early in the class period following other assignments, quizzes or the return of previous graded assignments. An accompanying verbal explanation of the assignment allows the students an additional opportunity to discuss the assignment and how it can be successfully completed. Insider information is critical to this technique working, instructors should have completed the assignments themselves or be intimately aware of the critical tasks in the assignments and the requisite time for complete each task and the total assignment.
