Time for Students

Time Management

Purpose Statement

By definition, "time management" implies the dog forever in pursuit of its tail; you just never catch up or have enough time. This is cultural baggage few acknowledge, of which fewer are aware, and even fewer try to adjust and alter. Students, staff, administrators and teachers bring this with them.

Description of Activity

These are some thoughts about time I share regularly with my students and apply to historical events:
1. As students, you probably have as much control of your time as the rich; the rich can alter time with money and you can alter it by developing your own balance between work, school-study and "kick back" time. You my strive for society's definition of balance but hopefully you will realize personal balance. The latter means to decide what you want to do most or give yourself the time to try and find out, or how to give yourself the time needed to live a relaxed, playful, focused, and reflective in-the-moment life, one day at a time.
2. As you create Number 1, you also learn that time only becomes meaningful the less you allow yourself to do what you want. When you have lots of it to spread around in spontaneous living it doesn't have the same meaning as it would if you forced yourself to make every second count.

There's no such thing as "quality time" unless you have a lot of space in which it can happen, and, most important, where you will be enjoying it, moment to moment.

Application

What's the practical application for you as a student? Sacrifices. Take more time to do less. Rushing thru school will make time rush; it's easy to do this, just let work (job hours) and school (units) give time so much meaning that every minute counts. But nothing is ever done well or learned thoroughly in a rush.
Or, you could decide to walk and wander. But that's what the world would call a "sacrifice," because it may take you an extra year or two to graduate from college...more time. Still, living and doing well does take more time, that's what quality always asks of us. And if you're in a hurry you just my pass up life's magic on the way.
Going slow is the fastest way to your goal.
Better yet, if you are going slow you may discover better goals and purpose for your life.
