Classroom Apathy/Reticence

Purpose Statement

To stimulate student reflection and redecision on the extent to which they actively participate in class.

Description of Activity

Complete item # 12 on the SASSI Scale, and compare one's response to the pattern of SBCC student responses.

Materials Needed

Self-Assessment for Success Screening Inventory
or item #12

Participating actively, cooperatively and equally in my classes, doing my share, contributing to the class is something:

(a) I do a lot 28.1%
(b) I do some 45.2 %
(c) I do just a little 21.2%
(d) I avoid 4.5%
(e) I rely on others 1.1%

Percentages indicate how a random sample of 784 SBCC students answered item #12 on the SASSI scale.

Application

A mini self-assessment that takes one minute for students to complete in class. Instructiors can follow up with a discussion on the relative importance of actively participating in class.

The complete 19 item SASSI scale can also be used. It takes about 7 - 10 minutes to complete and score. The SASSI is designed to be a self-assessment, self-diagnosis and self-referral instrument designed to stimulate meta-cognitive awareness on student success habits.
