Purpose Statement
Although there is
considerable disagreement in what exactly Higher Order Thinking Skills refers
to, there are good WEB sites for student to assess what the prevailing notions
about this topic really are.
Here's one: http://www.covington.k12.tn.us/resources/word/hots1.htm
Although I would arrange the skills in a different order because I am a trained
teaching philosopher, nevertheless this site sets the fundamentals in play.
They are:
Knowledge, Comprehension, Application, Analysis, Synthesis and Evaluation
Description of Activity
In exploring this site
students will gain insite into the levels of knowledge that are reciprocal and
symbiotic.
My own table of these Higher Order Thinking Skills entails the following levels
Higher-Order Skill Levels
Level One GeneralKnowledgeDevelopment
Level Two Conceptual Model Recognition
Level Three PresumptionAssumptionRecognition
Level Four Fallacy Recognition
Level Five Deductive InductiveRecognition
Level Six Valid and Sound Reasoning
Level Seven Conceptual Model Making
On my table level Seven leads right back to level One. Thus, students recognize
the endless process of ever expanding thought leading to knowledge as well as a
sound road map of how to get there dependably.

Any student that
seriously tries to elevate their Higher Order Thinking Skills will see
immediate results in all their academic disciplines. My own students report
this time after time. And it is no accident that the more successful students
