Purpose Statement
The INTERNET provides a
wealth of resources for students in need of study skill improvements including
notetaking. Students can improve at their own pace using these sites. All they
need it the motivation to improve.
Description of Activity
As an excellent
example of a useful site that provides a syllabus of student skills improvement
is a site at Virginia Tech called STUDENT SKILLS SELF-HELP INFORMATION.
The URL is:
http://www.ucc.vt.edu/stdyk/stdyhlp.html
Materials Needed
In addition to the
obvious need to have access to the INTERNET, students will need some skill in
'surfing' INTERNET sites as well as navigation in the site when they arrive.
Most students have these skills in super abundance. The LRC can educate those
that lack these computer skills.
Application
When faculty become
aware of students in need of notetaking or other study skills, sites such as
the Virginia Tech one should be assigned. Then the faculty can monitor progress
via e-mail with the student.
As faculty find more sites that address the issues of better notetaking and
study skills, the URL's should be included in the course syllabus to be
reviewed at the beginning of the course.
In this way, students with study skill needs have little or no excuse for not
trying to improve. Additionally, faculty are not distracted from course content
in order to boost study skills that should already be in the student's skill
set.
Consequently, students that need remedial or boot strap help in the following
study skill areas can use the INTERNET to improve. All they need is the desire
and a computer.
AREAS OF SELF HELP AVAIABLE AT THE SITE:
TIME SCHEDULING
ACRONYMS ( FOR NOTETAKING)
