Providing a model for good writing

Purpose Statement

This activity attempts to offer a model of excellence in paper-writing for students to aspire to and emulate.

Description of Activity

I give a take-home final (in addition to the in-class final during the final exam period) which is equivalent to a large, complex term paper. Students have almost a month to write it. In order to encourage them to do a superb job, I make available to them the very best final papers submitted the previous semester, to read (in my office) and serve as models for them. The topic (which draws upon materials studied throughout the semester) is too individualized and too complex to enable students to cheat with this help. The papers simply show students what a really good paper, one that has earned a top grade, looks like.

Materials Needed

The best papers written by students the previous semester.

Application

Students have never cheated by trying to copy these papers. It only takes some office-hour time.
