Virtual Videos

Problem Solving

Purpose Statement

Students learn to problem-solve by providing answers to questions posed by "virtual students" (video taped students on CD-ROM on computer).

Description of Activity

This is similar to a previous activity I listed for the time management category ("Student Scenarios").

Three students have a situation, or problem regarding the topic being studied. For instance, when studying marginal annotation, a student may have difficulty knowing the correct amount to highlight or underline. The "virtual student" would pose this problem, and the student would need to find a solution.

This also serves as a very nice review and effective "test" for the material.

Materials Needed

An alternative to the CD-ROM method, might be to type the situations and have students respond on paper, to video tape students and play the tape in class, or as previously suggested, to make the situations into "scripts" and have students present the problems to the class.

Application

Another alternative, is to have students list what problems they are facing with the material and brainstorming possible solutions as a class.
