Purpose Statement

It is important to post basic information on the web in both a written and pictorial manner. This takes into account the different learning styles of students. It is also important to provide students with the same basic information in different formats.

Description of Activity

Whether it be a hybrid course or a fully on-line course, an instructor has to take into account the assessibilty of the information. The curriculum process involved requires that the information be made available to visually impaired students. Faced with this situation I decided to provide outlines of my lectures using different approaches. All my lectures are in a Powerpoint format with written comments as well as pictorial images. The students see this information in class on the screen. They also have access to a written outline on a web page. At the bottom of the page they can also view the Powerpoint presentation on their own. The students will also purchase a class packet which has the Powerpoint presentation showing the images and outline they view in class. Thus, the student is presented with the same information in different ways; this should help different types of learners.

Materials Needed

If an instructor wishes to present information using pictorial images an excellent program to use is Powerpoint. It is fairly easy to learn. Thus, images are also presented to students along with written information. It does take time to gather images, scan them, and insert them into the Powerpoint program.

Application

As indicated above, my students will see the information in class in front on the screen. They can follow the presentations using their packets since they have the information on the screen in their packets. They can also view this information on their own time on the Internet.

Related Student Services

Faculty who are contemplating creating an internet class need to be cognizant of the fact that the information needs to be made accessible to DSPS students. Another factor to keep in mind is the fact that students learn in many different ways.
