Cooperative Group Work

Purpose Statement

I am a firm believer in group work. Students can help each other with learning and teach members of their group/class items that are misunderstood. This promotes the idea of students as teachers and teachers as learners and facilitators.

Description of Activity

Students can work in groups on different tasks: solicitation of opinions, clarification of material not understood, test review, or student's discussion of materials not covered by the instructor. Students must be given a specific taks or tasks. Roles should be assigned to group members; one person needs to record the thoughts of the group. A time limit should be set for the task or students will not focus on the task at hand.

Materials Needed

Instructors can prepare sheets ahead of time.

Application

The use of group discussions with work sheets to be filled in a certain time period forces students to focus on the task. The instructor has the opportunity to become a facilitator, walking around to answer questions and visit with students.

Related Student Services

If students are in a support program and are having problems with group work, the instructor can work with the support services to help students: DSPS, International, ESl, or Essential Skills students.
