Tutor Training
Tutorial 199 (1.0 Unit)
Tutorial 199 is a five-week course for students who want to gain or improve
tutoring skills. Students in this class will learn how to organize tutorial
sessions, help students develop problem-solving strategies, and offer assistance
with core academic competencies. Some of the topics covered include communication
skills, learning skills and styles, culture and learning, small group management,
and outcomes - based instructional support.
Tutorial 199 fulfills mandatory requirements for the CRLA (College Reading and Learning Association) Tutor Training Certificate.
The College Reading and Learning Association has certified over 275 tutor training programs since 1989. They offer certification at three levels; the Regular/Level 1 certificate, Advanced/Level 2, and Master/Level 3. To certify an institution, the CRLA carefully reviews the tutor training program according to CRLA guidelines. They review the syllabus, curriculum, textbooks and manuals, and any other materials related to the class.
Santa Barbara City College offers certification for Levels 1. Upon completion of Tutorial 199, students receive a tutoring certificate. This certificate is recognized at many colleges and universities here and abroad. It is also a good way to document skills for your resume.
