All new tutors are required to complete the new tutor training program
before they start their tutoring job(s).
Returning tutors are strongly encouraged to complete the program if they have
not already done so.
Benefits include:
- an opportunity to learn tutoring best practices before you start tutoring
- the ability to complete the program on your own time during the CLRC open
hours
- an opportunity to get paid for the time you spend learning more about becoming
an effective tutor
- an opportunity to meet with a mentor tutor to have your questions or concerns
addressed
The process for completing the tutor training program is as follows:
- Download and print the Tutor
Training Pre- and Post- Viewing Questions.
A copy of these questions can be found in the New Tutor Handbook.
- Complete the pre-viewing questions.
- Watch the two tutor training videos. There are two options:
a. Go to the CLRC counter and ask to view the tutoring videos. If you
are an SBCC student, make sure you have your student I. D., or a picture ID
that can be used with your student ID number. If you are a non-student, hourly
tutor without a student I. D., explain this to the counter worker.
b. Watch the tutor training videos: Mandatory
Tutor Training Part I and Mandatory
Tutor Training Part II. Note: You must have high speed internet access
and Quicktime installed on your computer to view these videos.
- After viewing the videos, complete the Post-Viewing Questions. Be sure to
include details from the videos to show what you have learned.
- With your Pre- and Post- Viewing Questions and answers, go to the Writing
Center and sign up to meet with a Center tutor (AKA mentor tutor) to discuss
your answers and any questions you may have.
- After meeting with the mentor tutor and asking him or her to sign your questions,
bring the signed questions to the Tutorial Center.
- Remember to post your tutor training hours on your time sheet. A maximum
of four hours is allowed for this program.
- If your employment paperwork is complete, you are now eligible to start
tutoring.. Enjoy your tutoring experience!
