| REQUIREMENTS |
| Three years experience as RHIT with progressive responsibility or demonstrated supervisory experience that confirms the ability to communicate effectively with management, physicians, peers, subordinates and a thorough knowledge of JCAHO, OSHA and EEOC requirements. |

This is a formal, two-year paid internship with the Department of Navy. This position is assigned to the Tumor Registry Division, Patient Administration Department, Naval Medical Center, San Diego, CA. The Tumor Registry Section follows patients diagnosed and/or treated at the Naval Medical Center for a malignancy. The Medical Records Technician is responsible for performing a variety of technical duties necessary for the development and analysis of diagnostic and therapeutic cancer data. The selectee will develop skills in performing a variety of tasks designed to prepare them for Medical Records work in Tumor Registry which may include reviewing, analyzing, coding, abstracting and compiling or extracting medical records data. This work requires a practical knowledge of medical records procedures and references, organization and consistency of medical records, and knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology. Formal and on-the-job instruction and training will be provided. Individuals successfully completing the program may be non-competitively converted to a permanent Federal position
PROMOTION POTENTIAL: Promotion to the next higher level is contingent upon satisfactory completion of training requirements and continuous satisfactory performance.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
A. One year of qualifying specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. This position requires a knowledge and understanding of medical terminology, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and data entry experience.
OR
B. Education – 4 years above high school level. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.
