Health IT Workforce Training Program

 

Clinician/Practitioner Consultant

Do you have a healthcare license or credential or have extensive healthcare-related experience?

Do you have experience with computers?

Are you interested in working with electronic health records?

If you answered yes to these questions, then you may be a good candidate for SBCC's new training program. The five-month Health IT Workforce training program will prepare licensed/credentialed professionals to work as Clinician/Practitioner Consultants in the implementation of electronic health records (EHR) systems.


What will the training cover?

The five-month training program will cover five main curriculum components, listed below.

Component Name

Component Description

Health Management Information Systems

A “theory” component, specific to health care and public health applications. Introduction to health IT standards, health-related data structures, software applications; enterprise architecture in health care and public health organizations.

Working with Health IT Systems*
*A Windows operating system (Windows XP, Vista or Windows7) is required for this course

A laboratory component. Students will work with simulated systems or real systems with simulated data. As they play the role of practitioners using these systems, they will learn what is happening “under the hood.” They will experience threats to security and appreciate the need for standards, high levels of usability, and how errors can occur. Materials must support hands-on experience in computer labs and on-site in health organizations.

Fundamentals of Health Workflow Process Analysis & Redesign

Fundamentals of health workflow process analysis and redesign as a necessary component of complete practice automation; includes topics of process validation and change management.

Quality Improvement

Introduces the concepts of health IT and practice workflow redesign as instruments of quality improvement. Addresses establishing a culture that supports increased quality and safety. Discusses approaches to assessing patient safety issues and implementing quality management and reporting through electronic systems.

Planning, Management and Leadership for Health IT

For those preparing for leadership roles, principles of leadership and effective management of teams. Emphasis on the leadership modes and styles best suited to IT deployment.

Minimum System Requirements (IMPORTANT)

1. Minimum of 5 GB of free disk space is required on the system c:\ drive. To determine free disk space: Open System by clicking the Start button , clicking My Computer or Computer in Windows Vista or Windows 7, right-clicking Local Disk (C:), and then clicking Properties.

2. Minimum of 1 GB RAM is recommended. To determine amount of RAM: Open System by clicking the Start button, right-clicking My Computer or Computer in Windows Vista or Windows 7, and then clicking Properties.

3.Administrative rights on the system.

Note: Currently the National Training and Dissemination Center (NTDC) can only confirm successful installations of VistA for Education on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. Installation of other operating systems (i.e. OSX, Linux, etc.) cannot be supported.


When will the training begin?

Next session begins in Summer 2012: June 11 through August 3. (EHR 101 and EHR 103)
Final session begins in Fall 2012: August 27 through October 19. (EHR 102, EHR 104, and EHR 105)

 


What is the method of delivery?

100% online. SBCC’s HIT Department was the first 100% online HIT program in the country.


How much does it cost?

For California residents, enrollment fees are $46 per unit. Financial Aid is available for California residents.


What are the prerequisites to enter the training?
  • Must have healthcare-related experience (license or credential preferred, such as RN, RT, PT, RHIT, CCS)

  • Must be committed to an intensive training program of at least 12 units of course work in less than six months

  • Course work or knowledge related to computers is STRONGLY advised

  • Must submit the Santa Barbara City College Application

  • Must submit the supplemental Health IT Workforce Training Program Application

  • Admissions priority is given to Veterans (other than dishonorable discharge) who have met the eligibility requirements. Spouses of disabled Veterans, and widows and widowers of Veterans who meet the eligibility requirements also receive priority.
