Biography:
I arrived in Santa Barbara, in July, 1999 from Rochester, New York (about a 5 hour drive from the Big Apple).

My background is in fine art printmaking, primarily intaglio. During my graduate studies at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), I participated in one of the first Apple Macintosh-based printing classes offered at the college, working on SE's (that's right, the ORIGINAL little Mac-in-a-box). During that period I also experimented with the Genigraphics computer, one of the original PC's developed just for graphic images. Because of this early access to computer technology, I was able to combine digital effects with traditional printmaking techniques.

An example of this early experimentation was to connect an analog camcorder directly into the Mac SE, and 'capture' a still image of myself onto the Mac screen. The image was then output directly to a dot-matrix printer, sometimes manipulating (pulling, pushing) the paper as it processed through the printer. These paper prints were then 'photographed' using a stat camera, enlarged and processed as positive film negatives. The image on the film was finally transferred to lithographic stones and/or etching plates which were coated with photochemicals. This complex, innovative process produced a radically new form of self-portrait, variations of which became a series shown in my masters thesis exhibit. The year was 1986.

I was hired as an instructor in Graphic Design at Monroe Community College (MCC) in Rochester shortly after my graduation from RIT. I was hired to revamp the Graphics program and to incorporate the computer into the curriculum, at the beginning of what was to become known as the Desktop Publishing revolution. I established the first PC computer lab for graphics and then created another, all-Macintosh lab, along with all new curriculum for the rapaidly- changing graphics and printing field.

I also had the opportunity to teach as an adjunct at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) at the Rochester Institute of Technology. I mastered sign language and began to teach drawing and design to first year students.

I continued to expand the graphics program at MCC to include certificates in HTML and web design, and In 1995 I developed professional workshops in desktop publishing and web design which were offered on a national basis to professionals in a variety of businesses.

In January of 1998, after returning from vacationing in Santa Barbara, to six feet of snow, I learned of the graphics position which had been made available at Santa Barbara City College. It didn't take much to convince me it was time for a change! ...and as they say, the rest is history!
