In todays world of jet travel and economic and political interdependence of nations,
knowledge of at least one foreign language is indispensable. A study of French,
in particular, expands individual consciousness, contributes to understanding
the history and
development of many countries, and provides the communication skills necessary
for a variety of
careers, including translator, interpreter, high school/college professor, international
company executive, hotel management, art expert, etc.
The University of California and the California State University instituted a
foreign language requirement for many majors in 1986. Consult this Catalog for
specific major requirements.
The French Program offers a sequence of courses in the basic language skills
of listening, speaking, reading and writing. On the intermediate level, courses
are designed for specific needs: conversation, grammar review and literature.
The Associate in Arts Degree may be obtained through a French major.

Planning a Program of Study
Since students majoring in French do so with a variety of objectives, a program
of study should be planned with the help of the college counselor for Foreign
Languages and the chairperson of the department. Transfer students are urged
to consult the current catalog of the institution which they plan to attend.
Sample Program
For a sample program, consult the catalog of the transfer institution of your
choice.
Preparation for Transfer
Course requirements for transfer vary depending upon the college or university
a student wishes to attend. Therefore, it is most important for a student to
consult with his/her counselor and departmental adviser before planning an academic
program for transfer. Information sheets for majors, outlining transfer requirements,
are available in the Counseling Center.
