Interview with Evan McCabe :

What teaching tip or counseling advice do you have for other faculty?

Have a topic that you are passionate about, and relay that to your students. I am passionate about the prevention of heart disease, especially in women, and I have helped the students by teaching them how to educate their patients about this important topic.

What "Words of Wisdom" do you have for other faculty?

Students tell me that my better qualities as an educator are that am calm as a clinical instructor at the hospital (not on the inside) and fair. Hopefully that creates an environment for learning.

What careers or jobs did you have before working at SBCC?

Cardiovascular Clinical Nurse Specialist, Private Practice

Clinical Preceptor, UCLA and Cal State Long Beach graduate nursing programs

RN, critical care, step-down unit,

Cardiac Rehabilitation RN and Supervisor

Community Health Educator

Who was your most influential teacher and why?

My most influential teacher was my high school World History teacher, Mrs. Mazza. She believed in me, and helped me set my own bar higher. She was my social sciences teacher throughout high school, and continually kept me on track, I knew she cared.

What is your favorite student line or excuse?

“Both my patients went home, does that mean I get to go home too?”

What are your hobbies/interests?

I am a National Spokesperson for “WomenHeart: A National Coalition of Women with Heart Disease” through the Mayo Clinic. I am passionate about educating all women about the prevention of heart disease. I have created the concept of “Pinot and Prevention” parties as a format for discussing women and heart disease in more informal settings.

What do you love about your job?

The students are constantly amazing me. This past semester, a dying patient looked up at my student and said,  “I couldn’t have gotten through the night without your help and support, you made a difference”. Nothing gets better than that!

What's one thing most people don't know about you?

I “guest starred” on General Hospital this past February to highlight the American Heart Association’s “Go Red for Women” campaign. I had a speaking part and even got paid!
