I majored in English, Portuguese, and Linguistics at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, where I also received my MA in Linguistics and Portuguese. In 2012, I received my PhD in Education with emphasis in Applied Linguistics and Cultural Perspectives and Comparative Education from the University of California, Santa Barbara. My dissertation work focused on ways in which online forum discussions supported English learners in developing strong opinions when writing for academic purposes in college settings. As a linguist, I love learning languages. I am a proud language learner and multilingual writer! I speak Portuguese, English, Spanish, and French, and would love to continue learning more languages!
I have been teaching English as a Foreign and Second Language since 2001. I taught English as a Foreign Language in Brazil for six years before starting to work at SBCC in the Fall of 2007. What I love about teaching English as a Foreign and Second Language is that I have had the opportunity to work with students from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds, including different ages - from seven to sixty years old! At SBCC, I have also had the opportunity to teach many different classes with wonderfully rich groups of students. I love working at SBCC!
