Requirements

Credit Requirements:

Credit for English 60, 65, 70 and 80 requires completion of all coursework and eligibility for English 70, 80, 100 and 103 respectively.
Credit for English 60A, 65A, 70A and 80A requires completion of all coursework.

Course Repetition:

Courses with an "A" description are courses that students are repeating.
Several English Skills courses have a restriction on the total number of times that they may be taken. Students will not be allowed to enroll in them more than the total number of times indicated:
One (1) Repetition: English 60, 65, 70, 80.
Three (3) Repetitions: English 104, 105, 106, 107, 108 and 109.
Four (4) Repetitions: English 104G.

English 60 & 60A - Basic Skills - Reading (3) F, S

Prerequisite: Placement by exam before registration.

Five (5) hours lecture weekly. Graded Credit/No Credit.
Development of basic reading skills for students who need to improve their reading skills in preparation for college courses. English 60/60A is a non-transferable remedial reading course. The class is an intensive reading course designed to improve confidence, fluency and accuracy in reading.
Students who complete all coursework, but who are not eligible for next level, will receive credit for English 60A. Students must receive credit for English 60 to be eligible for English 70.
English 65 & 65A - Basic Skills - Writing (3) F, S

Prerequisite: Placement by exam before registration.
Five (5) hours lecture weekly.
Graded Credit/No Credit.
Development of basic writing skills for students who need to improve their writing skills in preparation for college transfer courses. English 65/65A is a non-transferable remedial writing course. An intensive writing course designed to promote confidence, fluency and accuracy in the area of composition.
Students who complete all coursework, but who are not eligible for next level, will receive credit for English 65A. Students must receive credit for English 65 to be eligible for English 80.

English 70 & 70A - Effective Reading Techniques (3) F, S

Prerequisite: Placement by exam before registration.
Five (5) hours lecture weekly.
Graded Credit/No Credit.
Effective reading techniques for students who need to improve reading comprehension, study skills and vocabulary in preparation for college transfer courses. English 70/70A is a non-transferable remedial reading course which meets five hours weekly for three units of credit. It is intended for students who demonstrate the need for intensive work in reading, study skills and vocabulary development. Strongly emphasizes skills development appropriate to the needs of individuals.
Students who complete all coursework, but who are not eligible for next level, will receive credit for English 70A. Students must receive credit for English 70 to be eligible for English 103.

English 80 & 80A - Effective Writing Techniques (3) F, S

Prerequisite: Placement by exam before registration.
Five (5) hours lecture weekly.
Graded Credit/No Credit.
Effective writing techniques for students who need to improve their writing skills in preparation for college transfer courses. English 80/80A is a non-transferable remedial writing course. Eligibility for the course is determined by placement examination or by successfully completing a lower level writing course. An intensive writing course designed to promote confidence, fluency and accuracy in the area of composition.
Students who complete all coursework, but who are not eligible for next level, will receive credit for English 80A. Students must receive credit for English 80 to be eligible for English 100.

English 103 - Improvement of College Reading Skills (3) F, S - CSU

Prerequisite: Placement by exam before registration.
Five (5) hours lecture weekly.
Designed to improve comprehension, critical thinking skills, vocabulary, reading rate and study-reading techniques through reading and analyzing a variety of fiction and textbook selections.

English 105, 106, 107, 108, 109 - Study Skills (0.5-3)

One to three hours lecture weekly.
Graded Credit/No Credit.
A variable-unit course for students who wish to study more effectively. Includes note-taking, test-taking, text reading, time management and efficient study techniques.
105 - Spelling Improvement (1) F, S
106 - Vocabulary Development (1) F, S
107 - Grammar Skills (1) F, S
108 - Reading (1) F, S
109 - Library Resources (.5) F, S - CSU
Twenty-Seven hours per semester.
An individual self-paced course for students who wish to use library materials and resources more effectively. Includes print and nonprint materials, CD-ROM and online databases, and online public access catalog.
Open Entry/Open Exit.

Multicultural English Transfer Program Courses (MET):

Offers a multicultural, multidisciplinary curriculum in designated sections of English 70, 80, 100, 103 and 110 for students wanting to transfer or to complete certificate/degree programs. Each MET section has the designator (MET) after its ticket number.
