2009 Meet Stories
Friday, Sept. 4 -- SBCC at Ventura Invitational, 3:30 p.m.
Rigney takes fifth at Ventura Invitational
SBCC freshman Seanie Rigney placed fifth and teammate Erika Schaeffer was seventh on Friday in the season-opening Ventura Invitational cross county meet at Arroyo Verde Park. Rigney ran 22:33 on the hilly 5K women's course and Schaeffer was clocked in 23:00 on a hot day.
Alexandra Thompson was 17th in 24:25.
"We only raced three girls and they all ran very smart races," said Vaquero coach Scott Fickerson. "Each of the girls moved up 15-20 places during the race. Both Seanie and Erika ran faster than our No. 1 runner at this race last season and Alex ran faster than our No. 2 from a year ago."
In the men's four-mile race, Garrett Edwards was 32nd out of 134 runners in 24:20, Steven Semler was 37th in 24:24 and Michael Semler was 58th in 25:44.
"Garrett moved up steadily and passed upwards of 30 people," noted Fickerson. " Garrett and Steven were faster than our No. 1 last season and Michael was faster than our No. 3, so things look positive. We will race a full squad at Westmont (on Sept. 19)."

"Mark was 20th at the mile mark, about 10 seconds back," said coach Scott Fickerson. "He caught the leader at the 3 1/2 miles and pulled away on the final hill. We were 12th in the WSC last year, so this is a tremendous improvement."
