Mary also enjoys introducing students to the study of communication;
she regularly teaches the Introduction to Communication course, and has written a textbook,
Competent Communication (with Dan O'Hair, Gus Friedrich and John Wiemann). She has published
chapters on listening, communication skills, communication competence and communication theory.
On campus, Mary served as the chairperson of the Communication Department from 1989 to 1997.
She established the Communication Laboratory and developed the introductory course (Comm 101)
for the department. Mary was an Academic Senate representative, and she has been active in
student success efforts by chairing the Classroom Research Project, conducting workshops and
serving on the Learning Student Services committee.
Adapting communication behavior in technology use is a recent interest. Mary has designed online modules that help students and teachers communicate more effectively in mediated situations. Mary also conducts face-to-face workshops for some of these modules. She is an officer of the Human Communication and Technology Division of the National Communication Association.
Off campus, Mary enjoys walking, gardening, yoga, golf, and traveling. She has a husband at UCSB, a son in medical school, and a married daughter who works in media research and consulting. Mary also enjoys being involved in the Santa Barbara community, so she volunteers for the Old Mission, Catholic Charities, and a number of local educational institutions.
