Catalog Course Description

Introduction to the principles of effective communication in interpersonal relationships. Study of verbal and nonverbal channels, person perception, conflict resolution, listening, and communication barriers.

Grading

  • 100 points: QUIZZES. Quizzes will be given each day a reading or viewing assignment is scheduled. These quizzes are designed as a payoff for and comprehension check of the assigned material.

  • 400 points: TESTS. There will be two midterms and a final exam. These examinations are designed to measure understanding of material presented in the text and in class.

  • 200 points: ORAL SKILL checks. These exercises give students the chance to demonstrate competence in five important communication skills introduced in the course.

  • 200 points: APPLICATION LOG ENTRIES. During the semester students submit at least ten one-page entries, each of which links a personal observation, selection from literature, art, poetry, film, news, or other phenomenon to a topic covered in this class.

  • 100 points: ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION. This category includes attendance in class and for assignments in the Communication Lab.
