Dr. Thomas Larson has been teaching art history at Santa Barbara City College since 1989, joining the ranks of full-time faculty in Fall of 2000. He holds B.A. degrees from Brooks Institute and UCSB, as well as an M.A. and Ph.D. from UCSB. His specialization is the art of non-Western cultures, which includes the art of Native North America, Pre-Columbian Meso- and South America, Africa, and the South Seas. He also loves and teaches art of the 20th century. He has traveled extensively in America, Europe, Asia, and has directed study abroad programs to Florence and Peru. Thomas is also an artist, specializing in collage, watercolor, and book arts.  One of the main reasons I like the art of the 20th century is because I believe that its great achievement has been its expansion beyond mere representation. It's taken Western art and artists until the 20th century to be able to express spiritual truths, those unseen realities of the interior world, with visual art, whereas the art of small-scale societies has been doing this forever. In both teaching and in making art, I explore the symbolic visual language of various world cultures with their artistic traditions and spiritual technologies.  |
