This lively and popular show opens on Friday, November 14, from 5 – 7pm. Cash awards are presented the night of the opening. One of the oldest art competitions on the West Coast, this exhibition is juried from hundreds of artists’ submissions that use a variety of media. This year there were 322 entries with 53 selected for the show. The gallery is honored to have Daniel Dove as this year’s juror.He is a nationally exhibiting painter and Assistant Professor, Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. Mr. Dove received a BFA from the University of Texas at Austin and an MFA in painting from Yale University. He has been awarded grants from the Dallas Museum of Art and the Ohio Arts Council. In 2004, Daniel was selected the winner of the University of Miami OH’s Young Painters Competition by juror Buzz Spector.
Daniel has had solo shows in New York City at Jack Shainman Gallery and in Los Angeles at Cherry and Martin Gallery and Mark Moore Gallery. He has been included in group shows such as “Made in California” at the Frederick Weisman Museum, “I Love the Burbs” at the Katonah Museum of Art (curated by Ellen Keiter), “More is More: Maximalist Painting” at the Florida State University Museum (curated by Tatiana Flores), and “Dreaming of a More Better Future” at the Cleveland Institute of Art (curated by Saul Ostrow).
Publications include Art in America, Tema Celeste, The Los Angeles Times, The Village Voice, LA Weekly, Artforum.com, Harper’s, New American Paintings, the Cleveland Plain Dealer, and Angles Magazine.
ATKINSON GALLERY is located on the East Campus, on the second floor of the Humanities building, of Santa Barbara City College, at 721 Cliff Drive Santa Barbara.
