Colin Fraser Gray
October 3 -31, 2008
Opening Reception Friday, October 3, 5 -7pm
Artist lecture: Wednesday, October 22, 4:30

Colin Fraser Gray came to Santa Barbara from England in the early 1980’s. Since then he has enlivened the southern Californian culture with his exceptional talent, wit, and perceptive intellect. First noted for his quirky and dynamic sculptures, he expanded to drawings and prints of varying scale, public sculptural installations, and, recently, tapestries. He has exhibited in solo shows locally as well as in New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. He has also completed three permanent public art projects, two in the Santa Barbara area and one in Los Angeles. He has been awarded several grants, including a Pollock/Krasner Foundation award and the Santa Barbara County Individual Artists Award.
Atkinson Gallery is honored to exhibit the multifaceted work of this unique artist. This show will feature new large-scale drawings and tapestries. These tapestries, based on Gray’s drawings, were produced by John Nava.
A brochure will accompany the exhibition with an illuminating essay by Kim Beil that broadens and deepens the critical discussion of Colin Gray’s work. She is a contributing writer for art ltd., Artweek, Flavorpill, and Photographer’s Forum. After receiving a BA in Comparative Literature from Brown University, Beil worked in the photography department at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. She is now pursuing a PhD in Visual Studies at the University of California, Irvine.
This exhibition was underwritten through a generous donation from Bernard MacElhenny and Joan Benson.
Colin Fraser Gray will be on view during OFF-AXIS, Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Month - October 2008. Atkinson Gallery is pleased to be an institutional supporter of OFF-AXIS.
