Stephanie Dotson
February 29 – March 28, 2008
Opening Reception: Friday, February 29, 5 – 7pm
Artist’s lecture: Wednesday, March 19, 4:30pm

New SBCC art faculty member Stephanie Dotson uses an illustrative, design-oriented style. Her presentation, however, challenges the static quality of the graphic image. Her installation and print work have been exhibited in New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Portland, Oregon as well as the Atlanta Biennial in Atlanta GA. Her commercial design work includes poster art for the bands R.E.M., Widespread Panic, and Greenday.
Dotson’s multilayered, tactile and colorful assemblages combine drawing, painting, printmaking, digital design and paper cutouts. Her surfaces also vary: paper, vellum, felt, fabric, wood, glazed ceramic. The artist merges what she identifies as “decorative ” imagery – ornamental wallpaper patterns and storybook iconography, “the language of beauty and comfort”- with an often delicate, direct drawing style. In this fresh coalescing lies a maverick with slightly dark humor and visual punch. Ms. Dotson will attend the reception on February 29 and on March 19 will give a public lecture on her work.
