ATKINSON GALLERY at Santa Barbara City College is pleased to announce the 22nd small images exhibition. This lively and popular show opens on Friday, November 9, from 5 – 7pm.
One of the oldest art competitions on the West Coast, this exhibition is juried from hundreds of artists’ submissions that use a variety of media. Cash awards are presented the night of the opening.
The Gallery is honored to have Los Angeles based artist Alison Saar as this year’s juror. Her work has been exhibited internationally with exhibitions at the UCLA Fowler Museum of Cultural History, L.A. Louver Gallery, and Pasadena Museum of California Art and was an artist in residence at Dartmouth College.

Her sculptures and installations explore themes of African cultural diaspora and spirituality, and her studies of Latin American, Caribbean and African art and religion have informed her work. Saar’s interest in vernacular folk art of is evident in her sculptures and paintings.
Saar is a recipient of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, an Artist Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, and a City of Los Angeles (C.O.L.A.) Artist Fellowship.Among numerous institutions, her artwork is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum, all in New York; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Hirshhorn Museum, Washington ,D.C.; and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art.
