Over $8,500 of Merit Award Scholarships will be awarded to outstanding Art Department students. These Scholarships are made possible by the generous support of Santa Barbara City College by independent donors.

Each year students submit their best work in a variety of media, including Artists’ Books, Ceramics, Design, Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture and New Genre Artworks. This annual exhibition has a lengthy history of showcasing new creative talent.  The reception is always a well attended, lively event. The awards ceremony is particularly worth experiencing.

Atkinson Gallery and the SBCC Art Department are honored to have Kathryn Kanjo as the juror of the 2007 Student Exhibition. Ms. Kanjo is the new Director of the UCSB University Art Museum. She is a highly regarded arts administrator and dynamic educator with extensive curatorial experience.

Before coming to UCSB, Ms. Kanjo was executive director of Artpace San Antonio. Described as a "laboratory for the creation and advancement of international contemporary art," Artpace is a contemporary arts exhibition and educational foundation that invites visiting artists and curators for residencies and produces original exhibits and installations. Under Kanjo's leadership, Artpace experienced unprecedented growth, emphasizing community outreach and greater exposure for the artwork.

Prior to joining Artpace, Kanjo was curator of contemporary art at the Portland Art Museum. Earlier in her career, she was Associate curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Diego and manager of the Whitney Museum of American Art at the Equitable Center in New York City. The author of numerous publications, she received a B.A. in history and English literature from the University of Redlands and an M.A. in art history and museum studies from the University of Southern California.
