Art History
Our art history classes cover a broad range of subjects from Western and Non-Western Art History. Courses introduce student to the formal, conceptual and technical language of art, while investigating art as an expression of societal beliefs and values. H 111 and H 219 are the Art History classrooms.

ART 101 VISUAL LITERACY
Introduction to the language and meaning of visual imagery in art and everyday life.
ART 102A EARLY TWENTIETH CENTURY ART
Survey of the evolution of major styles, meanings, innovations and concepts in art during the first half of the 20th century.
ART 103 HISTORY OF ART: PREHISTORIC TO GOTHIC
Survey of art, from prehistoric times through the Gothic period. Examines the role of art in society through the course of human history.
ART 104 HISTORY OF ART: RENAISSANCE TO MODERN
Survey of art from the Renaissance to the mid-20th century, and an examination of its cultural and conceptual contexts.
ART 104H HISTORY OF ART: RENAISSANCE TO MODERN, HONORS
Survey of Western art, its styles and cultural context, from the Renaissance to the present.
ART 110 HISTORY OF WOMEN IN ART
Study of the role and contribution of women in Western art, both as artists and models.
ART 111 SURVEY OF TRIBAL ARTS
Overview of traditional arts of African trobes and kingdoms of Oceania and Australia, and of Native Americans located north of the Rio Grande River; their painting, sculpture, masks, ritual objects and architecture.
ART 114 HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY
Overview of the history of photography from 1839 to the present. Examines the development of photography and its role in visual communication and artistic expression. ART 204A BUSINESS OF ART
Provides students an opportunity to study the business of art, including learnign about making fine art; also learning about art-related careers..
ART 213A SURVEY OF ARCHITECTURE I
Survey of Western architecture, from the Paleolithic period to 1750. Focus on the development of architecture and urban design within the context of the social, political and cultural environments.
ART 215 SURVEY OF NON-WESTERN ART
Introduction to the art produced by the non-European world. Survey of the art of Asia, the Americas, Africa and Oceania.
ART 216 SURVEY OF ISLAMIC ART AND ARCHITECTURE
Introduction to Islamic art and architecture from Asia and North Africa to Spain, from the era of Muhammad to the Mughal empire of the 18th century. Considers how intercultural and trade relations between Europe and the Islamic world have influenced Islamic art.
