Hayden was born in Grantsville, West Virginia 1977. The oldest of three children he lived with his family in log cabin built by his father behind Cedar Creek State Park in Gilmer County, West Virginia for the first eight years of his life. It was during this time that he began his early exploration of drawing and woodcarving and developed an interest in the local flora and fauna. From West Virginia, Hayden’s family moved to Athens, Ohio where he began public school. Upon entering the first grade at age eight, he had not yet learned to read or write, but his aptitude for drawing and building were recognized and he was enrolled in advanced art classes. Despite his age difference Hayden was never skipped grades, but was continually encouraged to pursue his interests in subjects including art, science, mathematics and literature. In 1997 Hayden enrolled at Miami University as a fine arts major. While there, he won multiple awards for his outstanding performance in academics and the arts. With a double concentration in painting and sculpture and minor in art history, Hayden received his BFA with honors in May 2001. After graduating, Hayden spent six years as a working artist living in Toronto, Ontario, Louisville, Kentucky and Cincinnati, Ohio. Mounting several group and solo exhibitions during this time, Hayden continued his exploration of two and three-dimensional media including painting, drawing, sculpture and installation. In 2007, Hayden was accepted into the MFA program at University of California, Santa Barbara and awarded the Regents Special Fellowship, for continuing his study in the arts. Hayden is currently in his second year at UCSB where he is working with techniques involving printmaking, bookmaking, spinning wool, mask making, knot tying and lots and lots of drawing.
